[Cancelled] Mad Max 2/Road Warrior Regrade (Warner 97 DVD and LD)

(2015-03-26, 06:30 PM)Stamper Wrote: The original pan & scan dvd is the flip side of the original 1997 first MM2 DVD release. Should be easy to get on ebay or other for like 25 cents.

If this is the DVD you're talking about I still have a copy and am happy to rip and share:

Well said! We haven's set a new "Bonus projects" category for nothing... Wink

Indeed, I'm working hard on two new bonus projects, trying to gather as much material as possible; they are The Arrival and Cube 2 - even if I must admit they are not the most important, famous, best movies around, they "deserve" somehow to have a Bonus disc... the first has very little extra material on DVD, while the second has more, but scattered around many different editions... a MM2 Bonus disc will be a great thing to add to any fan collection!

Yes Andrea, did'nt know you had added this catergory.
Will open up a thread in the "Bonus Projects".
With all the great projects, this forum is really becoming the go to place for Movie Collectors.

Sorry for the late response, I got busy with a few things. I wrote a long response to everyone's individual posts that I accidentally erased and now rewriting all that seems redundant.

I think a bonus disc is a great idea and I appreciate all the work you guys are putting into it. Having an alternative version of the movie as a bonus feature is just icing on the cake. Thanks CSchmidlapp for starting up another thread dedicated to a bonus disc.

I've just recaptured both the 1991 pan & scan and the 1994 letterboxed laserdiscs.

My first job was to compare the audio tracks, which I've captured bitperfect for the first time. They appear to from the same source mix, albeit different masters - the early disc is subject to the low level typical of early 90s discs (peaking at -9dB), while the 1994 has terrific dynamic range:

The clarity on the later track is so good I'm wondering if it hasn't been tinkered with a little, but given it's the best I've ever heard it I'm inclined to turn a blind eye (though PDB, if you'd like to make your own comparison you might want to preview both before I start my sync).

On the video side, the P&S disc is much as you'd expect - rather a video-y look, with pretty poor contrast and blown out highlights. Having said that the colour balance is quite pleasing, if perhaps a little yellow.

If you have any use for the P&S video please let me know soon - even in Lagarith format it's occupying 50GB of drive space I'd rather use for other things!

Side note: though both discs carry the 'Road Warrior' titlecard (indicating US print sources), the 1991 disc has its WB logo plastered with the 1980s shield, while the 1994 retains the original Bass logo - perhaps it wasn't a high priority release. I guess they caught up to 'fixing' that widescreen master by the time the DVD was prepared...

Well without knowing which track is more true or accurate to the original DS optical tracks, I'm inclined to go for the 1994 with the better dynamics based off what you said Jonno. It also just looks better in that pic.

Concerning the P&S and drawing conclusions from that one pic, it skewers pretty close to 94 LD transfer. Unless you see some value in it that I don't see, I think I'm fine with the DVD and the 94 LD you gave me. That's more then enough material to work with.

But thanks for capturing it and thanks for all that hard work. I appreciate it.

Related but slightly of topic, the new trailer for Fury Road looks great:

Funny how its graded to look like the MM2 DVD/LD with its desert reds/oranges/yellow but also that blue I saw in the night scenes. Its like Miller was watching the DVD of MM2.

Agree! I think it could be an interesting action movie, even if I noted several similarities to other movies (the mask similar to latest Batman, the white men etc.) but this is the curse of us, movie lovers, who watched thousand (literally!) movies! That's why (I think) youngster likes movies more than me... all movies seem fresh and new, while often they contain "recalls" to older movies, but they don't know it (yet!) Big Grin

That's an interesting find on the audio Jonno, can't wait to hear the selected one for the project. Sounds like it'll be the 94 version.

Ok, it's looking like the 1994 is the way to go. I'm going to use Andrea's frame-matching method this time, which should be a great deal quicker than syncing by ear (and should help make sense of the slight differences in the BD and LD cuts). First I have to find my BD copy, mind, which hasn't reappeared yet since the house move  :-/

BTW I have to say I'm pretty darned excited about Fury Road. If it even slightly recaptures the exhilaration of watching the original films on VHS as a 14-year-old, it will have done its job!
