Looking for "The Terminator" (1984) theatrical color grading [FOUND]
#1
I'm fondling the idea of color regrading The Terminator Blu-Ray to theatrical look in the future but I have no idea if there is any kind of 35mm reference around. I have the DVD release, video capture from the Italian laserdisc (thanks to SpoRv), early TV recordings but no idea if the color of any of these are anywhere near its theatrical incarnation.
I remember a color regrade by kk650 from some years ago (and I probably still have it) but I'm not sure if it was based on any kind of visual reference.

Any 35mm frames going around? Are lobby cards a valid source? I think I have a couple of them from 1984.

2020 UPDATE. This is a 2 years old and very long thread on the topic, so here's a very short summary of what came out of it.
Very short summary of a long thread: it appears that the Blu-Ray of The Terminator features what is possibly the most faithful representation of theatrical colors that could have been seen in cinemas in 1984.

Come to think, I'd like to see the original color grading myself, if the early Thorn EMI VHS release didn't demonstrate it already.

I'll post some home video screenshots of course but it would be good to know if there is any 35mm reference at all floating around. There's lot of attention on T2, not enough love for T1! Big Grin

I have some 35mm cells of The Terminator which I need to scan. Isn't there a DVD taken from a release print?
If you haven't already done so, check out TeamBlu's T1 custom. It's really good

I didn't know about it, tomorrow I'll look into it. Any screenshot to compare with blu ray?

No screenshots sorry. I believe it is the VCL German DVD that comes from a print.

The old German DVD (on the left of the comparison) misses one scene, but also it has the theatrical end credits.

No way! And it has Deutsch Mono audio too!!! I'll have to add that to the foreign releases restoration projects since the Italian version is already in the works. Do you own that DVD Mr Brown?

Yeah.. it was hard to get, after the newer DVD releases came up. Somehow nobody with the knowledge of the differences in the Audio Track wanted to get rid of that old DVD. But one day I got lucky. Smile

I also have the stronger censored FSK16 DVD from that period, also same framing, but there is some german text credit on a frozen frame, after the Terminator arrived in our time, telling something about "good and evil" and "machines are neither good, nor evil, they just do their task" and that movie is about some machine programmed to destroy our future, and the fight against it... Big Grin somekind very strange oddity. Smile

EDIT:
AFAIK someone already made a "fit to BD german audio mono track" with the main audio taken from the german DVD, and the missing part (the eye operation scene) inserted from another source, but I never get hold of that.

2nd EDIT:
What about the french mono.. there was an old french DVD with a french Mono track, IIRC.

3rd edit:
Here is the discussion on TeamBlu's Terminator and Temrinator 2 Versiond:
http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Termina...330/page/1
On the first two pages the old german DVD is also mentioned and discussed.

I love you MrBrown! Ahah!

I would like to add any foreign mono mix of course but what I'm also really focusing on is hunting down foreign localizations. So far I have the Italian one and thanks to you the German. With Leo we have been working on rebuilding foreign versions in HD
