[Canceled] 2001 Regrade (Criterion Laserdisc)
#1
This was talked about a couple of times on the OT. I have the Kubrick approved Criterion LD and although I don't know if it is any more accurate than the current BD but I like its colors a lot better. Is there any interest in a regrade to the LD with the PCM, AC3 from the MGM (with alternative lines) and the tracks from the current BD?

Just floating the idea.

I'd say go for it!

But some test screenshots - I know you have some ready Wink would be really appreciated anyway!

Yes absolutely. But it might be helpful to do test shots graded to both the CC and the corrected MGM LD. The CC was supervised by SK in 1987/1988 but from the 35mm source. MGM scanned the 65mm IP for their 1991 LD but didn't get the color quite right. They corrected the color timing for the 1995 CAV box using the same transfer better pressed. The CLV ac3 reissue and DVD are seemingly identical to that.

Just floating a trail balloon to get some ideas.

Yes, please! Smile

I followed the discussion on OT for a while, also, and was really hoping someone would take it on.

This would be cool. I might have something to add to a project like this if you do.

I'll see if I can dig out my test shots. If not I'll come up with some others.

Yeah this is a long time coming.

From another forum ..

Maybe Kubrick's own copy of 2001:ASO, which was chopped up for give-aways in the $1000 Taschen limited edition The Making of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey book set *, would be helpful.

* In confirming, I found that the 2001 film strips were bundled only with Taschen's Stanley Kubrick Archives book (also a limited edition).

Turns out I did do some test shots years ago on the OT:

It seemed to me to recall something... but now that I've see those comparisons (http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/746925) I'm more confused than before! Smile

The LD seems to be inconsistent as regards what I would think to be white (floor/ceiling lights, mainly, in normal areas). With Kubrick's stamp-of-approval on this Criterion Collection release, are the whites getting lost in translation to laserdisc? Were there LD's and DVD's released near the same time (or definitely from the same master) that came out identically colored, or not?
