[Canceled] Aliens TV Cut and Theatrical Regrade (Fox THX Laserdisc)
#11
IIRC Cameron used his own CRT for the SE LD

Got ya. Thanks.

I know that transfer is notorious for being super noisy (video-wise). Andrea do you think it looks radical different then other transfers of Aliens? I sold my copy years ago and was going to get another one from ebay until I saw it high on the list for rotters

The SE LD is probably the most grainy title of all... and a known rotters, too!

What's about the PAL LD?

LDDB seems to think its not a rotter:

That's the PAL version, PDB - I think this is the one that Andrea's referring to:

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/00876/1504...%281986%29

This is the infamous story about Cameron and his TV set. I think it's talking about this original release, which was indeed quietly remastered in 1992 alongside the CE boxset.

Like you I'm a fan of both the 1995 transfers (Alien and Aliens), which were new negative scans apparently timed to match release prints. That said, there is an inherent limitation to the laser format's colour rendition that doesn't sit too well with Aliens' blue and red pallet - you're doing good work to compensate for this, looking forward to seeing more results!

Yes Jonno, I was referring to that LD! So, my memory serves me well - sometimes... Wink

Oh sorry guys, that was in response Andrea's inquiry about a PAL LD. I was looking for the PAL equivalent of that US Spec Edition LD and seeing if it was a rotter.

Jonno thanks for the help, that is a great story. I vaguely remember it. It was Van Ling, right? I actually have the remaster (PCM) Pan and Scan LD. I may have to try and capture a bit to see how it looks like compared to the 95.

I actually really like the 1995 LD. It runs a little extreme in colors sometimes but feels more true to the film then say the DVD which is way too bright and cool (the BD is much closer then the DVD). The 35mm trailer project is still just an experiment at this stage.

Andrea start writing things down now, we need to keep the knowledge.

You can obviously do what you want, but I think the 1995 LD does look too blue, almost purple (same issue I have with the excerpt you posted from Alien). I sometimes wonder if one of the reasons people complain about teal on modern transfers is because transfers from the 90s/00s sometimes pushed blues almost to indigo, and people tend to think the "blue" blues are correct.

When I've seen 80s film projected from 35mm (examples: Lethal Weapon, Evil Dead 2, Streets of Fire) those steely blues often seem to creep more toward cyan, bluer as they get darker and teal-er as they get lighter. Modern "teal-ized" transfers introduce green back into the blues, but often put in too much, and also make skin tones look way too cold and subdued - on prints I see, faces seem to be more peach with a slight hint of pink, and some orange (but nowhere near as orange as some modern transfers like to go). I see those characteristics in those frames of the Aliens trailer, and I also saw it when I saw the trailer for The Terminator projected in a theater. There is also a brief (camcorded) excerpt of Terminator from a Derann print on YouTube.

I'd love to see a print of Aliens someday. I know there were Derann 8mm prints of the film. I like what you're doing, but I'm just commenting. You don't have to take this stuff into consideration when doing your color correction, it's better if you do it the way you want.

You bring up good points Tservo. Frankly, that is a weakness in the LD transfer hence me researching the 35mm trailer version. The trailer does have some elements that you speak of. It is more red then any other version of Aliens I have seen except the 95 LD. Also unique to is that a yellow tint kind of endemic to 80's era films. I certainly have never seen that in any transfer of Aliens before. The LD and trailer are definitely in the warm category vs the cool of the DVD and BD. There is blue in the trailer but its of a different order then say the DVD. More pale a subdued then what we think of when we think Cameron "blues".

I've seen that 8mm of Terminator of youtube, love to see the one for Aliens. I tried looking for a LPP of Aliens and got pretty close a few times but no luck. 35mm prints of Aliens are very hard to come by and very expensive. I figured that the trailer was the next best thing till someone can get a print.

Oh I take this all in consideration, that why its in this thread. Thanks for your insight Servo

Hi guys,

I was wondering if in addition to the TC and the DC, this release could also include the TV cut version (there is a copy of the broadcast on spleen), which is a hybrid of the TC & the DC.

Since this cut was official, but never released on any home-video, it would be great to have it archived along the rest.

However, I do not mean any censored scene, I just mean the cut as it was broadcast, but with all the violence intact.
