I enjoy open matte as a bonus, not as a replacement. That's the gist of it: they can do whatever they want as long as the real deal is included with the same, if not better, care.

Today I did the editing. There was only a minor and very negligible discrepancy at what must be the 1st reel change around 18+ minutes, where the TC transfer has one extra frame at the end of 1st reel, but one less frame at the beginning of the 2nd reel, so it balances out right away, so no need to intervene with editing. Which is even more infuriating as they definitely could have included both cuts in seemless branching knowing that since there's only one extra scene in the DC. The DC transfer is otherwise more generous in its framing, especially in 3 shots that I noticed were very much zoomed in on the TC transfer. The verticality of the framing also varies at times between the two transfers. Now I need to tweak a bit the grading, colors and contrast and I'll render a review copy for those with good ears to determine if the TC track is in the right pitch as I was told it might not be and I can never determine that on my own. To be continued...

A bit funny this thread got bumped today. Earlier on Twitter I noticed an NLScavenger post that highlighted a bit of an odd quirk between the old theatrical master and the newer director's cut masters.

Okay, the review copy is ready. Ask for it by PM. I may have gone too far in contrast as the official UHD copy is very dark, kind of like the one for Heat, and I wanted to make things pop more in the dark scenes especially, and I think it turned out looking pretty much as a film print that way, generally speaking, I mean, as I never saw a print of this very film. I made it a tiny bit bluer to diminish the teal and I added a touch of red in the skin tones so that people don't look too pale, with actual blood running in their veins. But mostly, I wonder about the audio pitch. Member @titanic told me the theatrical Blu-ray had a pitch error at some point, and I wonder if Arrow fixed it on the bonus disc included in the 2025 UHD pack. To those with good ears able to determine such a thing, please come back with an answer on that matter.
