  Hello!
Posted by: EvilJames - 2020-09-27, 03:27 PM - Forum: Presentation - Replies (1)

Hi everyone,

I've been a lurker for a while but figured I'd introduce myself, seeing as I'm getting to the point where I'm feeling confident enough to actually upload some of the projects I've been working on for a while, even if they're not the most technically unimpeachable ones on the block (since that doesn't seem to stop others). Here's a sampling of some of the stuff I've been noodling with recently:

- Uncut 104-min version of Braindead in 1080p (without the framerate issues from Dr. Sapirstein's upload - looking for a JP LD rip or some other source for the uncut stereo audio)
- Pre-Criterion 219-min version of Heaven's Gate with intermission (looking for help removing DRM from iTunes file)
- Wages of Fear - 92-min shorter European version of Friedkin's Sorcerer in 1080p
- Salem's Lot - preservation of the shorter 112-min version released in cinemas outside the US

My day job keeps me pretty busy so it'll always take me a while to finish stuff, but I'm hoping to finally give back to the community that's given me so much joy over the years!

  Braindead - Japanese LD audio
Posted by: EvilJames - 2020-09-27, 03:20 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (18)

I posted this in another thread, but just in case it gets lost there - does anyone here have a rip of the Japanese LD of the uncut 104-min version of Peter Jackson's Braindead that they'd be willing to share? There's one on CG but with no seeds. I'm doing my own reconstruction of the uncut version (minus the framerate issues from Dr Sapirstein's version) but the only source I can find for the original stereo at the moment is a heavily compressed Nicovideo upload in multiple parts.

NEAR DARK (1987) 35 mm scan - HELP NEEDED
Posted by: pipefan413 - 2020-09-27, 03:11 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (60)

(2021-02-22, 03:27 AM)pipefan413 Wrote: Things are moving to the next stage: the scans are going ahead!

This means that we need one last push to get both of these (NEAR DARK and the other scan, which is a horror classic) to 100% so we can pay the entire scanning fee for both, shipping, and cover the cost of tapes for backup and an external hard drive to store the working copy of the raw scans.

In practice, this means the total remaining for both scans after all pledges have been paid is $179 in USD + £80 in GBP.

If you can help please let me know. Even if it's only a small donation, that makes all the difference as this gets right into the final stretch!

There are also currently $195 in pledges still outstanding (i.e. pledged but not actually paid yet).
We'll be paying the scanner imminently, so it is really important that anybody who hasn't yet sent their donation does so as soon as possible to avoid a shortfall. If you can do it within the next 24h that would be amazing, but don't worry if you can't, just obviously the sooner the better. Thank you again for your support!

I've recently begun to do my own LaserDisc captures, one of which is the lossless PCM version of the Ultra Stereo mix of NEAR DARK, to effectively replace the previous custom audio I put together (sourced primarily from DVD) for this film.

This drew the attention of @LucasGodzilla, who asked if I'd considered getting it scanned, because he'd noticed that there is a print available, which is reputedly in excellent condition. I had also seen that the print was out there, but I've thus far tried to remain somewhat cautious about organising something as involved as that for a few reasons.

That being said, this film deserves a bit of love, and it isn't getting it from the rights holder. The only places I believe you can currently buy it on Blu-ray are France and Germany, and I'm not even entirely sure the German release is fully legit as it is (e.g. the cover art appears to be lifted uncredited from a 2013 t-shirt and the video uses the exact same H.264 stream as the French Blu-ray without so much as a single bit of data out of place). Those releases arguably constitute an improvement over the earlier UK and US Blu-rays, and certainly over the Spanish one; I think the only one I've never actually checked myself is the Japanese one, but I expect it to be mostly identical to the UK/US ones. All of these releases are based on the same crappy old DVD master, which is presumably 1080i and has been DNR-scrubbed to within an inch of its life in all its iterations. The latest version also seems to have been brightened a bit which isn't always a good thing, though it sometimes appears to make some detail a little more apparent (one could claim that the blacks look less crushed, but that may not be and indeed almost certainly is not theatrically correct). If nothing else, the newer encode is at least done at a more respectable bitrate, but that doesn't help all that much if the grain is mostly gone already anyway.

With the LaserDisc audio now being captured and there being seemingly no sign of a new official scan and home video transfer on the horizon, perhaps it is time to explore the possibility of getting an unofficial scan done in the meantime. Hopefully it will one day be rendered unnecessary by a proper HD restoration from early-generation elements (negative or interpositive maybe) but there appears to be no indication of that happening any time soon.

You can either post your pledge in this thread, or if you'd prefer to remain a little more private you can PM me with it instead. I'll keep track of the pledges in the top post but anybody who wishes to remain anonymous here is perfectly entitled to!

NEAR DARK fans... show yerselves! Would you donate to get this film scanned?

  Twin Dragons (1992) LD audio
Posted by: Serums - 2020-09-26, 04:55 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (6)

Hello,

Am looking into the possibility at fixing up the HD print of 'Twin Dragons' if I can correct the colours and apply some desaturation.

A collaborator has synced up the classic dub and done a hybrid dub, but I'm wondering if anyone might have the LD Cantonese audio (or another decent-sounding track) that we can use in place of the blu-ray track, since I believe the one available to us only has a 5.1.

Thanks!

Jurassic Park - All Sound Mixes
Posted by: borisanddoris - 2020-09-25, 07:50 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (22)

Jurassic Park seems to have had so many different mixes/releases over the years and I'd like to start compiling them all.  Currently, I have the Cinema DTS that I helped work on initially, a LaserDisc PCM mix (resampled at 48khz), the Blu-ray 7.1 mix, and stashed away in a box the Dolby Digital and DTS (corrected) US DVDs.

Does anyone else have some of the following?

-LaserDisc LPCM bit perfect 44.1khz 16-bit (US and Japanese both?)
-LaserDisc Dolby AC3 (preferably raw capture)
-LaserDisc DTS (preferably raw capture)
-Japanese Superbit DVD

Thanks again!

On Deadly Ground (1994) - LD PCM

Anyone got said movie on LaserDisc and can share the PCM from it? Preferably with video to make syncing easier.

The German LD would be welcome as well.

  Encoding HDR to SDR
Posted by: awsmguy145 - 2020-09-25, 11:14 AM - Forum: Converting, encoding, authoring - Replies (3)

Hello. I have some HDR videos I want to encode into SDR mainly because I don't have any HDR screens and my laptop doesn't like using tools like madvr to change it to SDR while the videos are playing.

Truth be told, I am completely inept in ffmpeg and stuff like that, plus I've tried RipBot264 and it just does not seem to work on my desktop, even though it does on my laptop. I looked for tutorials and stuff and even went into the 2nd page of Google! Alas, nothing seemed to help me out.

Now there is the option to completely ignore it and keep watching it with the normal grey look you see normally in MPC-HC but my entire library of files are in SDR and I'd like this one to be SDR as well. I'd love if someone can guide me through this and teach me how to do this.

(if anyone asks, original codec of the file is HEVC and its fine if its encoded to HEVC or AVC i dont mind)

thank you so much Smile

Terminator 2 DTS CDS Mix from JP DVD resync to 2015 transfer
Posted by: Kreeep - 2020-09-23, 11:40 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - No Replies

I read that a decoded FLAC exists of the DTS CDS Mix from the 2003 Japanese DVD resynced to line up with the 2015 transfer of the film. Was really hoping to include it in my T2 project that I posted about a few days ago. I was going to attempt it myself, but no need if someone's already done it. If anyone has it, could you please send it my way? Thanks Smile
