I stumbled back here after looking at what sporv has done and I'm so excited to go down this rabbit hole.

Here's something that has me bumping my head against the wall. I captured a movie tonight for a project and just in case there were any dropped frames, I grabbed it twice at 1080p60 and twice at 720p60. It's from a Roku box, hence the 60fps. And sometimes 720p will appear sharper than 1080p from some sources that stream hence the decision to cap both resolutions. I was on a time limit so I wanted to try and cover all of my bases. Well I loaded the two 1080p caps up on timelines in Vegas, turned opacity to 50% on video track one so I could see both video files. I found a good frame to sync with and got them perfect. Then when I hit play, sync is fine for several seconds then they drift. I did the same with the two 720p caps and everything was good. I am leaning heavily toward my system not being able to cap 1080p reliably.

Capture source in this case was a Roku 2
Capture device is an Elgato Game Capture HD60 Pro
Capture software is the Elgato software (but I am reading up on OBS, dxtory and Virtualdub)
System is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, Intel i7 CPU, 8 cores, 12 gigs of ram and a partridge in a pair tree.

Any ideas here? While the system or the Elgato hardware/software could be culprits, it could also be the Roku 2 maybe? During capture, the game capture software is the only thing open although I realize that other processes are running. I did kill any that I knew I could but didn't kill things I was unsure of. Thanks in advance for any insight.

I was referred here by another forum member interested in capturing LD audio.

I have a fairly basic LD player (Pioneer CLD-V2400), but a decent ADC (Sony DVMC-DA2), and I enjoy obscure/overlooked restorations. I got into it for a different member who requested a LD or VHS capture of The Santa Clause (1994).

Other hobbies are homebrewing (prefer juicy IPAs), landscape/architecture photography (Canon), and working on cars (have a Honda S2000 and Jeep Grand Cherokee).

I ask the experts around here, which version is best to buy between the UK (Second Sight) and the German (Subkultur) Blu-Ray releases of Scanners (1981). They both seem to have the same quality of details but different colors and brightness. I wonder which one is more accurate.

In this scene in particular, the flames on the left seem to be overblown in the German release while they preserve more information in the UK version.

(I've PMed a couple people about this, only to then realise that they're already a part of the 'audio sync scene' here!)

Basically, I'll sync the LD (or even DVD) audio of any film released from the Classical Hollywood era, provided it sounds better than its blu-ray counterpart.

People here have contributed greatly to the preservation of mixes that haven't been issued on blu-ray, but as I'm finding with increasing frequency there are also countless instances where a film's mono or stereo mix has been filtered to such an extreme degree that it is no longer truly representative of the original sound mix.

This offer extends beyond just Hollywood films: anything from the 1960s and earlier, anything belonging to the Criterion Collection, etc.

If it's a movie I like, I can often bang out a synced version in a couple hours.

It would be great if anyone interested could reply with a list of the movies they own on LaserDisc that fall into these criteria. If you are unsure of whether the blu-ray sounds better or worse, I'd be happy to examine the captured track (or even an excerpt of it) in detail.

The Dark Knight Regrade (Imax Project #1, v1.1)

The goal of this project was to first restore the Imax shots to their full frame (from the CE BD and DVD) and correct the picture to remove as many faults (halos, etc) as possible. The second part involved pulling as many 35mm frames, 70mm frames, trailers, promotional material and boots to help better determine DK's look in theaters (less red , more green) and steer this regrade to look more like that. And third include the Cinema DTS soundtrack to the finished project, allowing you to hear the track as it appeared in theaters.

The BD image was run through a filter to reduce edge enhancement and then mixed with the 4:3/original matte Imax footage from the bonus features in the BE CE. Unfortunately, only 6 sequences were in full frame leave about 30+ shots still in 16:9. For those missing shots the full frame DVD was upscaled, de-blocked and dehalo-ed. The result works well for most shots with only 4 or 5 shots looking poor due to the DVD's noise. The resulting image was then color corrected with a 35mm LUT.

Batman - Open Matte (Upscale Project v1.3)

The open matte DVD upscaled with a combination of super-resolution and nnedi with filters to reduce macro-blocking and edge enhancement/halos. The resulting image was further processed and then re-grained with a real grain best matching the BD version. The video was then color corrected with a 35mm LUT and color matched to some 35mm frames and trailers.

Audio:
1. Dolby Surround PCM 2.0 from the wide screen laserdisc

2. Dolby Digital 5.1 from the open matte DVD.

I'm thinking about getting one of those video enhancers to re-captures a few LDs... but left wondering if, at this point, it would still be useful at all. Any advice ?
