Ok finished the video and I ran off a quick test file. It's just the color regrade and a AC3 2.0 downmix of the BD's soundtrack. If anyone wants to preview it for me, just so I can see how it looks/plays drop me a PM. The file is 4.13GB
On to the audio. Thanks given by: The Aluminum Falcon

Okay finished it and I think it looks great. Faithful to the original trailer and does really make it feel more connected to the original. Great work sir!

Thanks Farstarbuck. I've had some people have issues with the contrast-y look. So I'm going to pull a little more of the luma from the BD (about 75%) to give it a more video look but maintain the 35mm colors and a bit of the contrast. I also tweaked the beginning to some new 35m examples. It's coming together pretty well so far.

Hmmmm. I very much enjoyed the overall look. If anything I though slightly less Luma. But as it went on your eyes adjust and I felt it looked great. Still interested to see the changes and if you need some eyes then I'm here!

Much appreciated!

I like high contrast, but don't want to feel "responsible" for an eventual "too contrast-y" version
so... I'll patiently waiting for the final version!

Thanks guys for all the opinions. I value them greatly. I sent out that sample so I could get opinions back and I don't get too far off track.
Here is an example of what I am talking about for everyones else. This is the BD compared to the BD with 35mm LUT, The BD 35mm LUT with 50% of the luma from the BD and then 75% of the luma. [Image: xm1XqKB.jpg] I added the luma to balance out the picture a bit. The more luma from the BD I add makes the video appear more video-y and what people are use too without changing the colors. Less makes the pic more contrast and film like. I prefer the 50% mix but it might be a hard sell to some who might not like that higher contrast look. The differences can be subtle but are there.

As written before, I'd go with "high contrast all the way"; I'm perfectly aware that it could lead to eventual black crush and/or white clipping but, if they are limited (in screen time or shot numbers), I could live with it; it gives you that film-like look that many love... and, even if the difference given by the contrast may seem subtle (it is, indeed) between no BD luma and 50%, I still prefer the former.
It seems this high-contrast "trend" is reeeally limited, but is encountered on those b&w versions of color films (Logan, The Mist, Fury Road, ROTLA Soderbergh edition) if I'm not wrong. Ideal solution? Release both full and "50%" contrast versions - so everyone would be happy (but you, that should do everything twice) ![]() |
