I love Rocky (1976). I would love to find a version of this masterpiece in high quality in its original open-matte format. As far as I know, the original DVD as well as several LaserDiscs were released in this ratio. Subsequent releases, including the beautiful Blu-Ray and 4K home releases, have only been in the original 1.85:1 theatrical release. My only saving grace--and this is a real Hail Mary--is that it was perhaps aired on TV in the early 2000s in 1080i and uncropped. We were fortunate to have that happen with True Lies (1994) and the Matrix (1999) and others. Conspicuously, these releases were much close to the era of HDTV. Anyone have any clue of whether or not a movie from the Rocky-era would've been aired on HDTV?

Comparison by me of what the open-matte frames look like, sourced from an old trailer. I happen to think they look gorgeous.

P.S. I am new here--If there are more obvious resources for me to check out, please let me know. It looks like more discussion has been about finding the LaserDisc version for audio reasons.

So it looks like there was a new forum update that auto embeds links that are posted. But I've ran into an issue with mega where the auto-embed link removes the decryption key part, so if someone clicks on it then the link doesn't work.
I don't know if there's a way to configure things on the back end to not remove the rest of the link after the # to fix this, but I can see it being an annoying issue to deal with. I'd bet other file hosters also have issue but this is the only one I've noticed.

I have been waffling what to do about the Director's Cut of this film.

Years ago, with the help of a friend that spoke French, I constructed subtitles in English with translations for the non-English segments when the extended version was first released outside the U.S. (but Warner Bros. prevented a U.S. release).

Now there is the different extended Director's Cut from Criterion and I've come to the conclusion that I actually like the U.S. theatrical cut best.

As stupid as that sounds, the lead character, Claire, is much more likeable in that version. Also, there is some anti-American slams in the Director's cut that annoy me.

I was considering using Criterion's release and an old German DVD and U.S. laserdisc transfer as a guide to constructed an HD theatrical version, except it's beyond my abilities at the moment.

The problem being that there's credits in places where there isn't in the Criterion version, there's some commentator voice overs in the theatrical cut to make up for missing footage... basically there is a lot of differences. That's not taking into account some of the serious color changes.

Has anyone been considering trying to make this reconstruction?

Hi to everyone, I did some research in audio, so far compared VC-1 vs JPN transfer. It seems VC-1 TrueHD is better, even it's 16 bit rather than 24 bit of jpn.
