  Hi there!

Hello everyone!!!

I'd like to present myself as a complete movie aficionado , like most here I guess, and I could say a purist as well: very much interested in Theatrical Cuts, Original Color Timing and Original Mixes.

I've just found out about this forum a couple days ago through a user at blu-ray.com, and I'm just hooked!

I've been long time movie collector (almost 3 decades now), fan and avid reader of film, audio and home theater foruns.

Among those, I was a member and contributor (mostly financial, as I lack the skills and hardware to perform the magic some of the guys here can  Big Grin   ) to some projects at OT.com, but along the last 5 years life caught up with me in a way that I had to distance myself from it all for a while.

Thankfully, I'm back now, full throttle and totally into 4K UHD!!!

With 4k UHD I guess we can finally say we're close achieving archival quality for movies at home (what an age to be a collector!!!).

Doombot,

So good to see you're an admin here!

I hope you can remember me as we used to be sort of 'e-mail buddies' about some 4 or 5 years ago before I had to distance myself from this hobbie.

We were then invested in securing LDs for audio preservation and sync with Blu-ray. We got quite a few through a buddie in japan (I think he's here now, but with a different nickname).

From what I've read so far, I've also seen quite a few familiar names like spoRV, BusterD, Jonno, PDB, jerryshadoe and many others. I've very glad to know you're all still hanging around!

Well, it's great to be here and I wish to contribute!

Rocky (1976) - LD PCM Mono
Posted by: bendermac - 2019-10-02, 07:32 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - No Replies

Anyone has the LD (ML100249) of Rocky?
It seams to be the only one with digital PCM that has the original mono.

The Blu-ray only has the mono mix as lossy Dolby. Would be sweet to preserve the mix in lossless Smile

Thanks Smile

Highlander II - European Theatrical Cut - Preservation - Version 2!
Posted by: HippieDalek - 2019-10-01, 03:33 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (97)

Version 2.1 is now available!
Details here: https://fanrestore.com/thread-2840-post-...l#pid57882

Did you know there are five six different versions of Highlander II? Yep, five six! It's crazy.

  • USA Theatrical Cut
  • First European Theatrical Cut
  • Second European Theatrical Cut
  • Third European Theatrical Cut (Newly discovered)
  • Renegade Version
  • Special Edition
Sadly the European versions have been largely forgotten about, most likely because there has only ever been a single home release that contained the original English language audio track. Due to poor feedback the film was altered towards the end of it's run, which is why there are two European Theatrical versions.

The European versions are something like a half way house between the USA Theatrical and the Renegade; a lot of the additional content from Renegade is here but the ordering of the footage is very different and it loses a few scenes. And yes, Zeist remains intact! Much of the music throughout this version is strikingly different too. This is also the only version to contain the infamous "fairytale ending."

Back in 2008 a faneditor called Phineasbg created a preservation of the First European Cut, and I spent years trying to track it down. Once I finally got my hands on a copy I was disappointed to find that the picture quality was murky and the audio featured drop outs, glitches, missing segments and was also of overall poor quality.

Phineasbg did the an amazing job with what material was available at the time, but since then better quality visual sources have become available so I thought I'd have a go at putting together an updated preservation.

(Left: Phineasbg's Preservation, Right: This preservation)

[Image: jhoOhg3.png][Image: s7pTK53.jpg]
[Image: JqR376g.png][Image: DwNj0Ea.jpg]

As you can see, despite being a bit cropped, the visuals are much improved. However there is little I can do with the audio side. The original audio has only ever been released on a Hong Kong laserdisc, which is so rare that I have only ever spoken to one person who actually owns it. I now have my very own copy of the laserdisc and have used it for this project! I had hoped to get a new audio rip for this preservation but sadly I've been unable to contact the laserdisc owner again. Instead I've done what I can to patch and smooth over some of the rougher parts of Phineasbg's audio. This preservation would not be possible at all without all the hard work done previously by Phineasbg.

The project ended up being a lot more complex than I expected, in the end all of the following sources went into it!

Many of the picture sources are in native PAL. This preservation is presented at the correct 24fps, but 576p 24 isn't a widely accepted standard, so to preserve all the detail and the correct speed I've rendered the file at 720p 24. This is still a standard definition restoration though, so don't expect HD levels of detail.

I've also thrown together a handful of video extras (detailed in the image below), I've included these as a separate download.

There are some possibilities for a 2.0 release if anyone is interested:
  • Italian and German audio tracks
  • One scene had to be reconstructed using the letterboxed Renegade DVD. I'd like to replace this with the Blu Ray cut to preserve detail, but currently I don't have a Blu Ray drive to rip my disc.
  • I'm still looking into ways to improve the audio quality
As I have so many sources for every cut of the film, (including an excellent quality EU cut German surround track, and around 80% of the dialog and fx isolated from the Renegade cut) I'm attempting to reconstruct the audio from scratch. I've got about a quarter of the film done so far and it's sounding far better than I expected, so we'll see how it goes. I'll update if it all comes together.

I would still love to get hold of a fresh audio rip of the laserdisc though, so if anyone can help at all then please get in touch.

Anyway, I'll stop talking. PM for links and please let me know if you have any feedback.

I've uploaded an older version of the UK Trailer reconstruction to YouTube if anyone wants a preview.

(No longer available) Batman 1989 35mmized
Posted by: deleted user - 2019-09-28, 08:00 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (15)

This was already done for quite some time, but I wanted to wait until I would have the JAP LD audio synced and also decoded with my SDU4 and, being as lazy as I am, that took me some time to do.

Started to feel a little embarrassed that someone managed to do an entire other Batman 1989 regrade project and release it in the time it took me to get over my laziness, but that's life! Big Grin

Either way, this one is based on the UHD instead of the BD, so it's a little bit different. Enjoy!

Batman (1989) 35mmized

UHD 4K HDR Blu Ray regraded using photographs of an original 35mm print of the movie using a blanket 3D LUT. It was created using DrDre's ColorMatch tool and a lot of manual tweaking of the result. It has a few flaws you might notice, but overall I think it's a great improvement over the normal BD or UHD colors and has a nice high contrast "noir" look to it, for lack of a better words, similar to the photos of the 35mm.

In addition, the raw Laserdisc as well as raw Japanese Laserdisc audio is included, synced by bronan. The Japanese audio differs in being slightly quieter and not having the low frequencies filtered out. The audio is of course in English, the Laserdisc was merely published in Japan.

In addition, the Japanese Laserdisc audio was decoded to 4.0 with a Dolby SDU4, and then upconverted to 5.1 using a lowpass filter on all channels and duplicating the back center channel with a -3dB adjustment. In addition, this upconverted 5.1 was converted to a Dolby Headphone track that you can also select if you wish.

Other audio options include commentary tracks and the Dolby Atmos remix that came with the UHD. It's quite different in many ways and while not very authentic to the original, I think it's a nice modern alternative to listen to.

The encode is a 10-bit x264 encode in 4:4:4 colorspace. You will need a reasonably fast computer to play this back smoothly.

I included the encoding script including the 3D LUT in a subfolder, so if you have the UHD Remux, you can just replace the path in the .avs file and do your own encode with other settings if you prefer that. It will also work from any HDR encode of the UHD Blu Ray, but the quality of course won't be as good.

Project size is 40 GB. That's 30 GB for the video and 10 GB for the audio options, which are all lossless except for the commentary, that's just the format it came in.

Up on Blutopia now. Smile

Much thanks to PDB, bendermac and bronan for the LD audio and syncing work!

P.S. It pains me in my heart that I had to remove 40 beautiful screenshots from the post I initially prepared because the image limit is 50!

  A Better Tomorrow
Posted by: MeanjohnRambo - 2019-09-26, 07:23 PM - Forum: Movies, TV shows and other - Replies (12)

Does anyone else feel like A Better Tomorrow was a little underwhelming considering the level of praise it gets? I think Bullet in The Head is a much better drama and even what little action there is in BITH is miles better than the shootouts in ABT. Of course I prefer Woo's more action centric movies like Hard Boiled, The Killer, and Hard Target. Still BITH is a powerful drama

Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition Volume Three
Posted by: alleycat - 2019-09-25, 09:51 PM - Forum: Released - Replies (12)

In 2006 a group of fans from Original Trilogy created Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition Volume Two. Spread over four DVDs, it was a companion to the recently released Ultimate Edition Box Set, collating commentary tracks, documentaries and features that were not included in it.

This blu ray set is an updated version of that project, containing all the features used in Volume Two, with HD footage where possible and additional content. Thanks are given to those who created Volume 2, for without that this project would not be possible.

This is in no way a replacement for a legitimate copy of Dawn of the Dead.

Blu Ray Disc One (22.4 gig)

  • Extended Edition in HD with the choice of the Elite Laserdisc Audio Commentary, the UK BMG DVD Audio Commentary and a soundtrack only created using the original drop cues.
  • HD reconstruction of the Japanese Suspiria Version, using HD video and the original TV broadcast audio, with the choice of the original opening credits or HD opening credits.
Blu Ray Disc Two (18.8 gig)
  • House of George Romero Interview
  • Documentary on George A. Romero
  • The Directors - George A.Romero
  • G4 Icons - Episode 8 from Season 4 - George A. Romero
  • Clive Barker's A-Z of Horror - Episode 3 - Kingdom of the Dead
  • Son of The Incredibly Strange Film Show - Episode 8 from Season 4 - George A. Romero & Tom Savini
  • Mall Tour with David Emge, Ken Foree & Lenny Lies
  • Airstrip Tour with David Emge, Ken Foree & Jim Krut
  • 22 year cast reunion Q&A from Cinema Wasteland
  • Laserdisc supplementary material
  • German Super 8 Version with English Language
  • Japanese Explained Opening
  • Japanese TV Introduction with English subtitles
  • George A. Romero's Introduction to Dawn of the Dead from UK TV 1997
  • Biohazard 2 aka Resident Evil 2 - two versions of the George Romero Directed Trailer and a short making of documentary

The discs are both BD-J, created using professional software with resume function and animated menus. I would strongly suggest burning these to physical discs as software blu ray players don't always handle menus well, especially animated menus. I have tested these discs extensively but if there are any errors or issues let me know. This is my first completed project so hope you enjoy.

PM me for the links, contributing/long term members only please. Contributing means active members of the forum who post and/or make their own projects.

High Resolution cover and disc art available from @Pineapples101 Here.

Just to clarify this is a project that I have made for myself which I am choosing to share. If you don't like the project, if you think it should have been done differently then feel free to keep that to yourself and consider doing your own project.

[No Longer Available] Big Trouble in Little China Video Fix (Quick Project)

Big Trouble in Little China Video Fix (Quick Project v2.0)

Project Info

As discussed in Zoid's BTILC thread:

https://fanrestore.com/thread-1311.html?...ttle+china

There is a new BTILC master which has subjectively better colors then the old master used on the older BDs. The problem with it is that while the chroma is ok; the luma is a mess with gray blacks. That creates a picture without proper blacks and causes the colors to be washed out.

I know Zoid is working on a regrade based on his 70mm viewing that will have better colors then this but the scope of this project is to just improve the existing video master and combine that with the best audio I could find.

For this project, I found the French BD (Update: got the superior Italian for V2, thanks X5 and Beber) pinned blacks down to blacks, balanced the colors of the shadows, boosted the shadows and mids on a curve(s) and added slight exposure bump. All of this made the blacks truly black without crushing detail and keeps the colors the way they are, outside of the boost and changes made from altering the luma. Some examples:

French BD/Fixed Picture (Out of date pics but you get the idea)
https://i.imgur.com/wnKgby3.jpg

As for the aspect ratio, I was convinced by the discussion in Zoid's thread to leave it be.

On the audio side, I added the PCM 2.0 and DTS-HD MA 5.1 from the Arrow BD and then brought in the 4.1 from the US DVD which is probably from the 70mm mix.

Video:
The French Italian BD with luma adjustments detailed above

Audio: (Updated for V2)
1. DTS-HD MA 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the Italian BD) (default)
2. PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the Arrow UK BD)
3. Dolby Digital 4.1 (from the US DVD)
4. DTS-HD MA 5.1 (from the Arrow UK BD)
5. Commentary
6. DTS 5.1 French
7. DTS 5.1 German
8. DTS-HD MA 5.1 Italian

Can you actually separate the sound effects from the music in a movie so let's say you could insert new music over the original score? If it's possible how would you do it?

Flemish track Harry Potter Deathly Hallows P2
Posted by: Freddy - 2019-09-18, 04:26 PM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (7)

Hello everyone,

as a great Harry Potter fan, owning all the movies on Blu-ray, as well as the Open Mattes from spoRv,  Cool
I am looking for a particular track that I can not find anywhere. I'm not even sure it exists...  Huh

I am looking for the Flemish track (not the Dutch track) of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,
i.e. the last Harry Potter movie.

All my Harry Potter Blu-rays have a Dutch track as well as a Flemish track, except for the last one. And while the last one does have a Dutch track, I really would like the complete set of Flemish tracks.

Is there anyone who can help me get that track, or even knows where to get it or if it actually exists?...

Thanks for your help in advance! Smile

Freddy
