File Copy Verifing Software? |

Does anyone have any recommendations as to good (free) software to verify one file against a copy?
As an example: I am losing a HDD and copied everything off of it to another HDD and want to compare the files one to one, HDD to HDD, to make sure there is no corruption.
Does that make any sense?

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY
a visual guide to shots not on the final cut [updated: 2019-01-13]
From Official Teaser Trailer:
1) 00:10 Sections of dialogue spoken by General Draven to Jyn. It is heard in the teaser and first official trailer (some of the dialogue is heard in the theatrical release).
Quote:State your name for the record... Jyn Erso... forgery of Imperial documents, possession of stolen property, aggravated assault, resisting arrest
Can you be trusted without your shackles?
2) 00:28 - Jyn's famous line heard first in the teaser trailer was cut from the theatrical release
Quote:This is a Rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel!
3) 00:42 - In the trailer, Mon Mothma tells Jyn her mission involves investigating a “major weapons test” that is “imminent.” In the film, Mon Mothma gives her a different mission: To find Saw Gerrera in the hopes that he can lead them to Jyn’s father, Galen Erso.
4) 1:02 - This shot isn’t in the movie.
5) 1:12 - These shots of Jyn and Cassian running through the Imperial base aren’t in the film (in the film, they’re disguised as Imperial officers inside the base).

6) 1:17 - This shot of Orson Krennic walking through the watery ruins of the Battle of Scarif doesn’t appear in the film. (Krennic never leaves the Scarif base, in fact. Plus, the entire battle takes place in broad daylight, and this scene is at sunset.)
7) 1:19 - Throughout the teaser, we hear Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera. In this shot, we see a young Saw is the one delivering this voiceover:
Quote:What will you do when they catch you? What will you do if they break you? If you continue to fight, what will you become?
Except the young Saw only appears in Rogue One in the film’s brief prologue, where he rescues Jyn from Krennic and his Deathtroopers. When the movie finds him again, Saw is a broken-down fighter with a huge tuft of gray hair.
8) 1:22 - One of the longest shots in the Rogue One teaser follows Jyn and Cassian running with Rebel forces on a Scarif beach amidst heavy blaster fire from AT-ATs. Except Jyn and Cassian never run with Rebel forces on a Scarif beach; they spend the entire battle inside the base while the rest of the Rogue One squad distract the Imperial army. (This is probably the most important change on this entire list. It seems to suggest that Jyn and Cassian previously attempted to hand-deliver the Death Star plans. In the movie, they never make it off the planet. In the original cut, did they escape? Is it possible Jyn or Cassian survived previous iterations of Rogue One?)

9) 1:28 - The teaser ends with a dramatic reveal of Jyn in an Imperial uniform, looking down a hallway in the Scarif base. The shot appeared in several trailers and TV spots.
From official Trailer #1
(image missing)
10) 0:45 - Cassian says “I’ve been recruiting for the Rebellion for a long time.” Has he? He doesn’t say that in the movie, and we don’t see him recruit anyone. In the film, he’s a ruthless spy sent on missions that sometimes blur the line between right and wrong.
11) This shot of X-Wing pilots being paraded through the streets of Jedha got cut too.
12) 1:02 - K-2SO says to Jyn
Quote:K-2SO: The Captain says you are a friend. I will not kill you.
Jyn: Thanks.
None of this appears in Rogue One. (And by the time this scene occurs in the film, Jyn and K-2SO have already met.)
13) 1:45 - In the trailer, Jyn walks out on a catwalk above the Scarif Imperial Base and is confronted by a TIE fighter. In Rogue One, Jyn walks out on that catwalk to realign a satellite dish to transmit the Death Star plans. But no TIE fighter ever zooms up into view like this.

14) 1:52 - The words “A Star Wars Story” don’t appear onscreen in the film, which only bears the title “Rogue One.”
15) 1:56 - This shot of Darth Vader doesn’t appear in the movie.
From official Trailer #2
16) 0:41 - This dramatic shot of a massive fallen statue doesn’t appear in the movie. (A different angle appears instead.)
17) 1:15 - This shot of Vader’s reflection doesn’t appear in the movie.
18) 1:16 - This line from Krennic
Quote:The power we are dealing with here is immeasurable!
(not to mention Ben Mendelsohn’s wonderful delivery of the word “POW-wah”) didn’t make the final cut.
From other trailers, teaser, featurettes (if someone could identify which ones, it will be great!)
19) Dialogue exchange between General Draven and Jyn that was cut. It is heard in the teaser trailer.
Quote:General Draven: Is that clear?
Jyn: Yes Sir.
20) This shot of the Death Star is not featured like this. But from another perspective (Tarkin).
21) This scene does take place, but not with this camera angle. Note: the hidden character is headless...
22) Other shot of Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera with no hair and not gray beard.
23) This shot exists. But is mirrored and she it talking to K-2SO, not Cassian Andor.
24) This shot of deathtroopers is not featured in the movie.
25) The following line from K-2S0 is not in the movie:
Quote:They're requesting a call sign
26) This shot from the trailer is mirrored. They're running from left to the right.
27) Jyn and Cassian escaping the radar tower in Scarif with the plans to the Death Star in hand
28) Imperial Stormtroopers marching through the water of Scarif
29) In the behind-the-scenes sizzle reel, we see Jyn, again with Death Star plans in hand, running through the beach turned war zone. Cassian can also be seen in the frame.
30) Even TV spots from 10 days before release feature shots of Jyn with the Death Star plans on the beach.
31) During this clip you can barely make out Alan Tudyk in the background running in his motion capture suit, confirming that K-2SO was still alive as Jyn and Cassian stormed the beach with the Death Star plans.
32) Jyn with Death Star plans in hand.
33) This image of Krennic hints at a showdown that never happened. He does grab a weapon and go after Jyn and Cassian in the final film, but this particular moment never happened.
34) Baze on Eadu saying:
Quote:I fight the Empire now...
You destroyed our home!
35) This scene where the Rebellion high command looks at a projection of the Death Star also made it into the trailer, but never into the film. This makes sense, since the mission in the movie is to have Jyn find her father, not just the weapon, and the rest of the film is retrieving the plans. While I guess they could have had everyone just trying to find out what’s depicted in the projection, having no shots of it works even better.
36) Jyn talking to Saw in his cave. The scene appears in the theatrical release, but these pieces of dialogue said by Jyn have been cut. They are taken from the special extended look and leaked celebration trailer
Quote:The Empire is building a terrible weapon, capable of destroying an entire planet
There isn't much time. Everyday, we grow weaker. While they grow stronger. This is our chance, to make a real difference.
37) Mon Mothma talking to Jyn about her troubled history. The dialogue was heard in the first teaser, but was not in the final scene. On your own from the age of fifteen
Quote:reckless, aggressive, and undisciplined.
38) Extended Saw Gerrera dialogue that was cut from the full conversation between him and Jyn. It is heard in the first official trailer.
Quote:The world, is coming undone...
40) Jyn dialogue - directed towards General Draven
Quote:Let's just get this over with, shall we?
41) Mon Mothma - important dialogue. The dialogue was first heard in the teaser trailer.
Quote:We have intercepted a coded-Imperial transmission. It indicates that a major weapons test is imminent. We need to know what it is, and how to destroy it.
42) Jyn talking to Chirrut featured a line heard in several TV spots
Quote:Are you with me?
43) From the official trailer
Quote:Cassian: If you're really doing this, I want to help.
Jyn: Then let's go.
44) It appears that Jan Dodonna had a bigger role in early cuts of the film as we see him talking to Jyn in the same spot Mon Mothma consulted Jyn.
45) A minor shot that was cut from the theatrical release showed us a glimpse of rebel crew in the same position others had in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.
46) Chirrut had dialogue in the moments before Jyn, Casssian and the rebel crew prepared for battle
Quote:Take hold of this moment, the Force is strong.
47) Jyn also has extended dialogue in the conversation between her and Cassian while discussing her possession of the blaster on the U-Wing. She says:
Quote:We'll need a team.
48) This shot with Baze was cut
49) ...as well as this one.
50) There is a shot of Chirrut that was cut from the theatrical release but appeared in several trailers
51) The Rebellion is huddled together having a discussion of some sort with General Draven, Jan Dodonna, and Senator Jebel in the center. The scene never appeared in the final cut.
52) A shot of Krennic approaching Imperial officers appeared in the IMAX TV spot but was cut.
53) The little girl who Jyn rescues on Jedha appears to be looking up at the Death Star firing Jedha City straight down. The shot was cut.
54) A shot of Jyn that never appeared in the theatrical release (alternate wide shot)
55) As Jyn, Cassian, K2, Chirrut, Baze and Bodhi flee Jedha during its destruction, Jyn screams to Cassian
Quote:GO, GO, GO!
56) Mon Mothma dialogue from the second official trailer
Quote:Our Rebellion, is all that remains to push back the Empire.
57) Mon Mothma says to Jyn in the theatrical release of the film; "I'm sorry, Jyn. The odds are too great." Jyn then proceeds to leave. But right after Mothma says the odds are too great, she is heard saying in TV spot 23:
Quote:We need to surrender.
The line was cut.
58) a cut line heard first in the official Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Featurette where Jyn Erso says:
Quote:Anyone not willing to risk being left behind, now is your chance to speak up.
59) Extended Jyn Erso dialogue; while she has her rally speech in the conference room scene, there is unheard dialogue that was cut but heard in a few TV spots:
Quote:...but there's a way to defeat it [Death Star]. We need to capture the plans.
60) Jyn has several alternative pieces of dialogue in the U-Wing scene with Cassian, here is a cut line:
Quote:We need to find a way to defeat it.
61) ...and another one:
Quote:We can stop them.
Another set of alternate lines from the same scene that were cut:
Quote:If my father is a key to destroying a terrible weapon, then we'll find him... And bring him back
Quote:If my father built this thing, then we'll need to find him... And bring him back
62) In the second official trailer, the back of Tarkin's head is seen as he approaches Krennic and a group of other Imperial officers.
63) An unseen shot of Krennic while he invades the Erso family.
64) Mon Mothma dialogue from the first teaser trailer -- "We have a mission for you..."
65) Jyn asks
Quote:So why me?
during her conversation with Mon Mothma and Cassian. The line was cut.
Additional minor shots and dialogue (will get a "number" when related images will be found)
- From the leaked celebration trailer -- two shots about a second each were cut from the theatrical release; In the first shot, there is an unseen camera angle of Jyn running from her father and mother in the flashback scene. The theatrical release does include shots of Jyn running from her parents, but different ones. In the second shot, Jyn is on Jedha City with Cassian and turns around to see an Imperial Assault Hovertank.
- Right before Jyn, Cassian and the rebel crew board the stolen Imperial shuttle on Yavin IV, Jyn says to the team; "Welcome to the Rebellion, soilders."
- Jyn and Cassian pilot a U-Wing in the official trailer. They both exchange dialogue saying "good" to each other.
- Jyn had an alternate line replacing "May the Force be with us" while speaking to the rebel crew before leaving for Scarif. She said; "Welcome to Rogue One."
- One of the many lines that was cut due to the reshoots was in her meeting with Mon Mothma; "I was trained to fight, not to stand down."
- A line heard in the TV Spot Together had Jyn saying; "I need your help."
- Cassian dialogue from the official trailer that was cut -- "I've been recruiting for the Rebellion for a long time."
- In a shot heavily featured throughout the trailers and TV spots, Death Troopers are seen firing at a specific target.
- From official trailer -- After Kaytoo says, "There is a ninety-seven point six-percent chance of failure," Cassian says, "He means well."
- The scene where Bodhi is asked for a call sign may have played out slightly differently as we can see in several TV spots that he is telling Jyn; "You might want to, strap in."
- As Jyn walks across the bridge to adjust the dish in order to transmit the plans on Scarif, she is stopped as a TIE-fighter approaches in front of her. The scene was altered in post-production due to repetitive action from the scene prior.
- Cassian says to Jyn in an unidentified scene, "We'll follow your lead." The line was cut but is heard in the second international trailer.
- The flashback scene played out differently in some areas, as the eight year old Jyn is heard screaming, "FATHER!" in the second international trailer.
- Jyn is heard saying in the third international trailer, "It could be the end of us all."
- Chirrut speaks to an unidentified individual saying the following, "Our tasks have become one." This line first heard in the fourth international trailer was cut from the final film.
- Baze speaks to Jyn in the fourth international trailer and says, "I go where he goes."
Story element changes due to reshoots
- The entire battle of Scarif played out very differently from what seen in the final cut. Originally, Jyn and Cassian escaped as a team with the rest of the rebels across the beach while physically holding the Death Star plans. And based on the trailers, TV spots, featurettes and other promotional material, the battle was to take place during the evening. With the group of rebels (including Baze and Chirrut) having a small role, the original cut had much more screen time with them as there a variety of shots that indicate this.
- In the theatrical release of Rogue One, Jyn is seen rescuing a little girl who lost her mother on Jedha City. In the celebration reel, it appears that she meets the young girl earlier when she is seen giving the child a red object. The scene could have played out in a variety of ways as it could have been minor as a deleted scene, or possibly vital to the rest of the action seen on Jedha City.
- In the first cut of Rogue One, it can be assumed that Saw was never meant to have hair as we can see an adult Jyn standing next to him while he is bald in the celebration reel at 1 minute and 59 seconds. It is unknown why the decision was taken to make Saw have grey hair.
- Eight seconds in to the Jyn Erso Featurette, Jyn and Andor are seen walking on the outskirts of Jedha with a group of camels and other individuals.
From TV spots - they could not be considered "canon" by many, but are officially licenced nevertheless

NOTES
There are A LOT of bits&pieces in A LOT of places like teasers, trailers, featurettes etc. I’ll try to gather them all, but it will be a quite hard task… any help is appreciate, just post a comment with the missing shot description and eventual dialog, a picture (640px wide or more, with cropped black bars if any), and the source (possibly the exact trailer/teaser name/number).
If a scene is found on multiple sources, I’ll note only the best one, or, if quality is the same, the most easy to find.
Updates: - 2019-01-08 original post
- 2019-01-13 added a lot of links to youtube videos, thanks to oojason from OT
- 2019-01-14 replaced three broken links, thanks to BandobrasTuk from OT
To do list:- Place the scenes in chronological order (now are in random order)
- Add eventual new scenes, in particular the ones found on documentaries, specials etc.
- Find a way to give each scene/shot an unique ID - like DVD001, BDR001 etc. - that will be used as reference.

FLAC muxed with mkvmerge losing sync |

Strange thing and it might just be me forgetting to do something but every flac file I mux into a MKV using mkvmerge goes out of sync. It starts fine but slowly drifts as the video progreses.
That's with flac files I have made, flac files others have made and using different audio programs and especially different versions of mkvmerge.
If I convert the flac to PCM, it will merge fine and remains in sync. Convert it back to flac and it's a no go.
Any idea as to what I'm forgetting?

Threads (1984) - Severin vs. Simply BDs |

This harrowing film about nuclear war may be the only film I know of that had two new masters in the course of one year, with both releases bookending 2018. (Actually the Simply version was released on DVD first, in April, but the BD didn't come out until December.) The Simply version wins. While the Severin version was minted from a 2K scan, the Simply version came from the original BBC CRI prints. The difference is night and day!

http://www.framecompare.com/image-compar...n/0CBJNNNU
Other things to note: - The film is meant to run at 25fps, PAL standard essentially. The Simply version gets this right, but the Severin version defaults to 24fps. You can tell from the lower pitch of the sound.
- The subtitles vary. In the detention camp scene, a prisoner shouts "Buggered if I'm gonna be shot by a traffic warden!" The Severin BD loses this in translation, so the subtitle is... something else. I mean, I didn't quite catch it myself watching that scene for the first time, but now I look at it, I probably should have!
UPDATE: It turns out the Simply DVD has the same error. In fact, I've concluded that every release of Threads up to the Simply BD had that erroneous subtitle. I may even draw up a comparison chart between the subtitles for each release, just for the heck of it...
- The Simply version has an addendum at the end of the film with credits for the 2018 restoration.
- Both Blu-rays are region-locked: Severin is Region A, Simply is Region B.
- The Simply BD also has an exclusive audio commentary with Karen Meagher, and a PDF of Radio Times articles and letters.
- Additionally, the Simply BD debuts a widescreen version of the film on disc 2. It's basically the same film but cropped to 16:9. But it's director-approved, so there's that.

random full frame film cells |

We all know that there are movies shot in full frame, and showed in theaters in letterbox - as well as released in home video with the same letterbox, or, sometimes, in open matte - but sometimes final prints, instead of anamorphic, are full frame as well! It will be great to have some of them scanned, as the film full frame is... well, full?
True Lies
Terminator
Predator
Comparison with home versions
True Lies - film cell Vs 1.33:1 TV capture
Terminator - film cells Vs 1.66:1 Japanese laserdisc
Predator - film cells Vs 1.33:1 DVD
Do you see how much is lost? Sure, the whole frames were not intended to be seen by us, "mere" mortals (read: director's composition and such...) but hey, if they are available somehow, why can't we have a chance to see them?
Other cells ill follow ; too lazy to make further comparisons with home media, though, so I'll leave them to you!

Warning: SPOILERS for The Hateful Eight below (duh)
Well, I needed some practice with Davinci Resolve for another, much more complicated project, and I have been wanting to do this for quite some time, so I'm happy to announce this project, Version 1 of which is rendering right now.
The Hateful Eight is one of my favorite Tarantino movies (don't hate). The Blu-ray for The Hateful Eight leaves something to be desired. In particular, the color timing just isn't how I remember it looking in theaters, and it is light on the details. Thankfully, some kind Russian folks leaked a 4K encode of what they claimed to be a DCP copy from Russia. However, the 25fps would suggest otherwise. Either way, this Russian 4K version looks stellar. It's way, way better than the Blu-ray. In general, colors seem more accurate, with less of a magenta push. Snow, in particular, looks great in the 4K. Also, dat detail is awesome.
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/127071
(I'll post more comparisons once my PC is done rendering the project) (Also Frame Compare was giving me an error so I used screenshotcomparison, please don't kill me Rob )
The only problems were:
1. It was 25 fps.
2. The main title and chapter titles were in Russian
3. Two very brief spots have burned in Russian subtitles.
Thankfully, problem 1 is fixed quite easily. I just slowed it down.
Problem 2 was also easy, I just swapped in the 1080p Blu-ray title footage for the 4K version. It's mostly white text on a black background, so the resolution change shouldn't be very noticeable if at all. The main title and Quentin Tarantino credit are in yellow, but even they are on a black background and the 1080p footage looks fine here. Thankfully, the opening credits that aren't on a black background are in English in the Russian version, so that got to stay as is. Same goes for the end credits.
Problem 3 is the one that I don't have a great solution for. For v1, I simply swapped in the 1080p Blu-ray footage in these spots. The first of these sequences is literally a single shot and, frankly, I'm not too worried about it. The second sequence is a brief dialogue between two characters speaking Spanish. It's only a few shots long. For v2, I want to color match the Blu-ray footage to the 4K footage so it's as minimally obvious as possible, but honestly, it doesn't look bad as is. 99.9% of this thing is just the 4K release slowed down.
As far as audio, I have synced this to the Blu-ray's audio. I don't really have any issues with the track, and a few minor differences in the length of the chapter title cards meant that using the DCP's audio would be super duper annoying. In addition, that audio had to be re-encoded because of PAL speedup anyway, so the 5.1 from the Blu-ray just made sense as the thing to use here.
(Images would not post so here is an album with them all: https://imgur.com/a/RZarDuS)
Here's a report on the work I did:
- Added two frames of black to the end of title to sync with Blu-ray
- There is a missing frame in the Blu-ray during the long shot just after the title, I cut one frame of black from the “Chapter 1” title card in order to compensate for this and remain in sync for dialogue and such
- The last frame before the Chapter 2 title card is missing on the Blu-ray, which contains one extra flame of black and therefore otherwise maintains sync with the 4K in this instance. This frame is unique to the 4K. I left it in because why not: https://imgur.com/MJb8Ltg
- The Chapter 3 title card is one frame shorter on the Blu-ray. I accounted for this.
- The end of Chapter 3 has another unique frame! This time it looks like the following. It’s worth noting that the frames just before this one are perfectly in sync between the two versions, and that this frame is only in the 4K. I left this one in, too: https://imgur.com/uMOEu7i
- During the Chapter 4 title card is where the two versions differ in sync significantly. The Blu-ray version (and therefore this version) is quite a bit longer than the Russian 4K. In addition, the fade in from black after the title card is missing its first frame in the Russian 4K version, so i’ve simply added one more black frame there. In case you’re thinking some awesome frame of Tarantino goodness is now missing, don’t worry, it looks like this: https://imgur.com/w1ID7Ht
- If you look closely at the above frame, you’ll see a tiny little dot toward the center of the screen. That’s a lantern, here’s what a few frames later looks like: https://imgur.com/YJ8vDXe
- The first frame after the Chapter 5 title card was duplicated on the Blu-ray. There was an extra black frame in the 4K. I guessed that the black frame, rather than the duplication, was correct, so I went with that.
- A few select shots in Chapter 5 feature burned in subtitles. I have replaced those shots with the matching shots from the Blu-ray. In the future, I’d like to Color Match these shots to the shots from the 4K version, but for now, they are copied directly. Here are the Russian shots, followed by the English shots. The first is this outdoor shot: https://imgur.com/fgtNGOI https://imgur.com/wnDDSJ1
- The there's this quick dialogue sequence: https://imgur.com/bKBqffj https://imgur.com/nUtIOot
- The Final Chapter title card is significantly longer in the Russian 4K version. I’ve cut it down to match the Blu-ray (by simply replacing it, just like the others).
Next project: Stealing Tarantino's 35mm print of the longer Roadshow Cut that they show at The New Beverly and scanning it so we can have the superior cut of the movie

"Jaws" audio commentary to sync to Blu-ray |

Hey, guys.
I found out about this commentary (https://www.podcastone.com/episode/The-R...ara-Knopic) by Mark Reilly from Collider and Dan Murrell from Screen Junkies, accompagnied with their significant others. I watched the movie on my media player with the commentary playing on my PC on the side, and I enjoyed their views on it. Both these guys, who have been part of my daily routine for movie news for years now, are massive fans of the movie: they comment on Spielberg's direction, John Williams' score, meaning of scenes, the mix of genres involved, the structure of the movie, the flawed audio remix and the pan & scan butchering the old home video releases, etc.
So, if any of you audio guys would give it a shot at downloading this commentary and trim the introduction to sync it to the Blu-ray, that would be a cool bonus. They give you a count when they start the movie and you can hear the movie sometimes to check on the sync, so I'm sure for someone with the know-how it will be very simple. They also comment beyond the end credits, so I don't know what could be done there-- either cut it out or let it and depending on the player, maybe it will stop or continue to play without video... I don't know.
Oh, and happy new year!

The Thing Regrade |

A simple regrade of John Carpenter’s The Thing. While certainly revisionist, some felt that Dean Cundey’s color grade for Scream Factory’s 2016 2K scan served the film better than Arrow’s likely-true-to-source grading on their 2017 4K scan. This project seeks to marry the two. Using Arrow’s superior scan as a base, I’m doing a SHOT BY SHOT color regrade to the Scream Factory color grade using Dr. Dre’s fantastic color matching tool by creating custom LUT .cube files for every single shot in the film. I’m up to shot 234 at the moment and am nearly 1/4 of the way through the movie. I’ve also created a custom mask so as to not incorporate the color changes in the letterbox bars as, in a few shots, they were raising the blacks in the bars a tad. I’ll be muxing the finished video product together with the untouched 4.1 70mm audio and releasing as a BD-25 on myspleen.
