Regrading "The Silence of the Lambs", toying with the curves
Posted by: Beber - 2019-03-28, 01:15 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (31)

Hey, guys.

No promises, but I'm trying this. The whole idea started in this thread: https://fanrestore.com/thread-1921.html?...+the+lambs

Using a French tutorial YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzRik0z...zPxP1bSXyg) for DaVinci Resolve and an early 90s VHS that apparently uses the same old transfer as this clip I found on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0A-1gbJzdU) as color reference, I have started to regrade the movie. Why using the VHS instead of the old Criterion DVD? Because it's a better reference to try to replicate the color timing of a 35mm print, like the one I had the chance to see about a year, a year and a half ago. Not an easy job to learn from scratch, pals! So here I am, toying with the curves...

Point Break (1991) Open Matte - Recommendations??
Posted by: DeafYakuza - 2019-03-28, 01:02 AM - Forum: Official and unofficial releases - Replies (13)

I need some recommendations of professional people of here who are knowing about that.
So, I have downloaded the open matte version of Point Break (1991) starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.
It seems that the quality have artefacts like Top Gun open matte version.
Which video editing software or effects should I take it to remove artefats and get better quality? I can use Adobe Effects and Premiere or Sony Vegas.

I’m looking forward to your recommendations.

My Thread of Random Color Comparisons
Posted by: LucasGodzilla - 2019-03-27, 04:35 AM - Forum: Requests, proposals, help - Replies (17)

I just thought I'd make this thread as a little personal note keeping system for myself and for others to see. A way to keep track of the many instances where there are some pretty massive color incongruencies between modern HD transfers of older movies and older transfers or scanned trailers without necessarily bringing a whole project upon myself. A little hobby thing really as I experiment more and more with Dr. Dre's Color Matching tool.

Opera (1987)

Browsing around YouTube, I ended up finding an Orion trailer of the movie.

For the most part, there aren't any real incredibly notable color differences that are worth really taking note of except for one very brief shot.

[Image: vlcsnap-2019-03-26-18h50m47s919-B.png][Image: vlcsnap-2019-03-26-18h49m32s739.png][Image: vlcsnap-2019-03-26-18h51m55s818.png]
(Trailer - Scorpion Blu-Ray - Arrow DVD)

In the trailer, the statue head is bathed in blue lighting which seems to be mostly absent in other transfers. As such, a took a moment and white-balanced the trailer, and then I lined up the frame from the trailer (white balanced it from the Orion logo preceding the trailer) and the Scorpion Blu-Ray to make a small LUT in Dr. Dre's Color Matching tool. From there, I imported a latter frame from the same shot to regrade, resulting in this.

[Image: vlcsnap-2019-03-26-19h13m37s106.png][Image: vlcsnap-2019-03-26-19h13m37s106.png]

Results aren't perfect, and I have no idea how accurate that trailer really is, but it's something I find interesting to look at.

Inferno (1980)

Similarly to Opera, on YouTube, I found an Arrow trailer of the movie.

A few things notable about this was how it's darker and more colorful than any of the transfers I've seen. There were several shots shown that on the Blu-Rays I've seen that were neutral in comparison and missing some of the blues shown in the trailer.

As such, I white-balanced the trailer and lined up frames with their Blue Underground Blu-Ray counterparts and threw them into color matcher.

[Image: vlcsnap-2019-03-26-15h13m37s422.png][Image: vlcsnap-2019-03-26-14h17m29s628.png][Image: vlcsnap-2019-03-26-14h15m49s521.png]
[Image: vlcsnap-2019-03-26-15h13m37s422.png][Image: vlcsnap-2019-03-26-14h17m29s628.png][Image: vlcsnap-2019-03-26-14h15m49s521.png]

I think the results are nice since even though I'm not sure how accurate the trailer is in terms of colors, it does have a closer semblance to the likes of Suspiria which I admittedly prefer.

Rainbow Help me build the "definitive" FanRes computer!
Posted by: spoRv - 2019-03-25, 08:04 PM - Forum: Everything else... - Replies (1)

Lately, my last computer had problems; taken to a computer shop to change the PSU, discovering they KILLED my main HDD, using cable from the old PSU - which, of course, was not compatible... adding insult to injuries, they do not even admitted they made a wrong move, but just said "it can happen in every moment!" - where the HDD PCB was clearly burned... I also bought a brand new PCB for that, only to discover that it was (not) the only problem... so, I lost EVERY previously made Fundamental Collection final projects! Sad More, I spent money for a useless PCB, a small SSD just to make it work temorarily, and a new PSU - useless, as the problem was the CPU cooler!

Long story short, I decided to sell the remains of the PC (CPU/MB/RAM/PSU) for few bucks, and to restart with a new, fast, powerful HEDT!

What I wanted to build actually cost, brand new, an arm and a leg (plus the left kidney, I suppose), so I started to see around for an used one.

Found that one of my friend decided to sell his supa-dupa workstation - barely used, in very pristine condition - because he wants to upgrade to "faster hardware" (just for the sake of it)... the price of his rig is very good indeed (here, it's possible to find out at the same price used computers with just one GPU, half the RAM, worst MB, half wattage PSU etc.)

The system is made by the following components:

CPU: AMD Threadripper 1950X
MB: ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme
cooler: Enermax Liqtech II TR4 240mm
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V 64GB 3200 CL14
GPU: 2x AMD Vega Frontier 16GB
PSU: Enermax G2 1300W

add to them my own old case, small SATA SSD, various HDDs.

Now, the problem is, I can't afford it right now, because I had to divert those funds to cover sudden expenses that could be not delayed; sure, I could always wait several months and buy another computer, yet this rig is great, the price too, and I am 100% sure it is in very good condition, almost brand new, quite some residual warranty - all things that will probably never happen again for the same item.

My friend said that he can allow me some time to pay it in full... so, I'm here to ask if there is someone that could be interested to help me buying it; all money received will be used only and exclusively to cover the computer cost and, in the (very remote) chance funds will be higher, they will be used to add NVME m.2 SSD(s) for fast caching, and HDD(s) for archival purposes (and possibly backup). This computer will be used, of course, to make fanres projects - I have several half-made (to name few, Dobermann regrade, Silent Hill UAR) almost ready, but I thought to release the following first:

Alien UHD - http://alien.tk

I know that an UHD-BD will be released on April 23rd 2019, but I'm pretty sure it will not be as good as mine, and it will be wonderful to release mine before it, and discover I was right! Big Grin also, other UHD projects will be released soon, but I do need that kind of power to release them in few weeks, instead of many months (if ever) using my actual 12yrs old PC...

Because there are always some new users (and some old ones, too), that ask if they can do something to help me... well, now it's the time! If you like my previous projects, and want to see some brand new and improved ones, chime in!

For the moment, I just want to know if you will/can donate some cash - to let my friend be aware; then, eventually, starting to raise money in the next week.

Thanks a lot in advance to anybody who will contribute to keep my fan restoration dream alive!

  Weird bug on this website
Posted by: deleted user - 2019-03-23, 09:05 PM - Forum: Bug reports and suggestions - Replies (23)

Somehow the films on ebay thread (the AMPS one) never appears for me in the "View Unread Posts", even when there is an unread post in it. But I always get the email notification.

This is the one I mean: https://fanrestore.com/thread-619-post-48649.html

Any idea why?

  CPU: new or used?
Posted by: spoRv - 2019-03-23, 01:46 AM - Forum: Everything else... - Replies (3)

CPU is a very important part in a computer build; most powerful ones are quite expensive, so thinking about buying an used one could be understandable. Yet, it would be quite difficult (if not impossible) to understand if it's good or not.

Now, three questions:

1) would you buy an used CPU?
2) if so, at what price (in percent)?
3) if not, latest model at full price, or previous one at a reduced price?

  [FIJI] Film Restoration macros.
Posted by: althor1138 - 2019-03-22, 11:46 PM - Forum: Script snippets - Replies (6)

I've been working a bit on using ImageJ/FIJI as a method for performing various film restoration methods. It is a work in progress and there are quite a few new ideas that I've yet to implement and the code is probably atrocious.

Dual Image Sequence Registration:
https://github.com/althor1138/DISR-FIJI-MACRO

It basically takes two identical film clips from separate sources and registers them spatially.

If you don't want to mess with installing the plugin just download the fiji.app folder here and open up FIJI. The plugin is in the plugins tab under FILM TOOLS.

25fps PAL video mastered at 24fps with dupe frames
Posted by: SpaceBlackKnight - 2019-03-17, 06:22 AM - Forum: Converting, encoding, authoring - Replies (3)

Hi all, I have a video source that shows as 23.976p but exhibits a "skip" or freeze every second or couple of frames. Now comparing the other 24fps sourced source I have (which unfortunately exhibits some kind of blended frames with baked in interlaced scanlines  Sick ) I'm 100% positive this one was a 4% sped up PAL master as the pitch is higher and runs shorter than the 24fps frame blended source. The 25fps source, aside the dupe frames thanks to the botched 24fps conversion, appeared to have been natively progressive and didn't exhibit any blended frames.

At worst, I could buy the title in question on BD since it should be available in the proper frame rate, and avoid further headaches with screwed up encodes by airheaded uploaders. However, if this were a title not readily available and extremely rare to come by, plus being the only file out there with a screwed up fps like my example, what would be the best way to fix it?

I will provide footage via PM on request.
