[Canceled] Die Hard 2 35mm Regrade (The 35 Project)
#51
Interesting stuff. I remember when bleach bypass was the new big thing to get bums on seats in cinemas, along with the return of ib tech (before Thomson shut it down). As always it was 'too expensive' to do in anything but limited runs.

Not to get too far off topic, here is a rough look at the versions.

US BD/JPN BD/35mm Trailer
[Image: usYaqs8.jpg]

The US to clearly meant be the bleach bypass, the JPN somewhere in between and the 35mm looks like the majority of release prints. Of course I'll have to balance out the 35mm pic...

The 35mm colors are very nice indeed; I've found out my PAL IT DVD to make a comparison, and it has the same color grading as the US BD.

Ok back on topic. I think I'm not going to include any of the BD's soundtrack in favor of only LD tracks. So it will be Zoidberg's PCM track from the JPN LD, the US THX LD's PCM and AC3 tracks.

In comparing the JPN and THX there does seems to be some differences. When looking at the waveform it looks like the THX is louder but looking through Spek at the first 50 mins you get this:

THX

JPN

and for reference the BD's DTS-HD MA 5.1 downmixed to PCM 2.0 for sync

So it appears that the JPN LD has a little more activity (or less noise reduction that I didn't notice).

Also, I'm syncing all 3 tracks at the same time and did notice one small sound effect difference in the fight in the luggage room on the JPN LD. It's super minor and nothing you would notice without doing a one-to-one comparison. But I'm far from done yet.

Then please keep it Blu-ray sync friendly so that we can add our dubs on our sides.

It will be 100% BD synced. No worries. The only off thing will be that in replacing the Fox fanfare that any tracks from the BD(s) will be out of sync for just that moment. The rest of the movie they should be fine.

I can live with that.

Small update. I've finished tweaking the video to a point where I think I'm done. I'm going to run off the avi this weekend.

Both of the THX soundtracks (pcm and ac3) are synced. That was relatively easy since both tracks only went out of sync every 8 to 10 mins at what I assume were missing frames at the reel changes.

The hold up is that I'm still syncing the Japanese pcm track. That one is very out of sync requiring syncing every 1 to 2 mins sometimes down to seconds. So it's taking a bit of time.

PDB, I saw a few pages ago that you had interest in Die Hard 3 also. As it happens, I just went to a 35mm screening of it last night. I can tell you that compared to the Blu-ray, the movie looks colder, cyan-bluer, greener than the Blu-ray which has too much red in it and thus too pinkish skintones.
