[Proposal] Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves (1991) - Theatrical Cut
#1
It seems there is quite an interest on obtaining the TC cut of this film in HDTV, but I can assure you is a real mess, and it SHOULD be improved somehow... it's on my usual project drawer, but I can think to take it out, because I'd like to do it before Team Blu... Wink

Color grading: I'm thinking to use laserdisc as reference, what do you think?

Is the HDTV version that's in bad condition or are all theatrical cut prints in that pink tint?

Don't know about theatrical prints, but the HDTV is... but, there is also a 35mm available to eventually transfer! Wink

I could of course just compare some frames to the old letterboxed DVD...
Btw, I've seen some of the 1080p HDTV version now... and it isn't great.  13.3gb for a 2 hour+ movie is just not enough to keep the picture sharp and block free.
I'm starting to wonder if the best answer, barring a 35mm transfer, might be a reconstruction.
Edit: I don't have anything set up to screen cap VHS, but here is the theatrical cut DVD vs HDTV... DVD resized to fix AR, HDTV shrunk to 480p.  We're just comparing color after all.

Not a matching shot, but here is a BD Extended Cut screenie for comparison:

Absolutely, yes! I have fond memories of this film from my childhood and would love to see a quality version of the theatrical version. :-)

It's time to start this project for real!

I think the best way is to use the Blu-ray as main source, and HDTV for those few scenes not present in the Extended Cut; when properly cleaned, Cinemax is not that bad, almost comparable to TMC, which has that nasty logo... combined together, I think it's possible to obtain a quite good compromise for those scenes - not that BD is a stellar HD material, by the way.

There are three color gradings, BD, HDTV, SD (DVD/LD); the latter is clearly too magenta and dark, while the BD seems to bright, tealized and with some "neon greens" - it has also magenta left in the whites, like in clouds; the HDTV seems to have the most pleasing and balanced colors. The LD open matte is a nice alternative.
