Resident Evil saga - open matte & color grading |

OK, I must admit I've contracted the open matte fever... it's subtle, and I think it's difficult to heal from it... so, meanwhile, I thought about the open matte version of the whole Resident Evil saga...
Last edit: 2018-01-26
2002 — Resident Evil
Aspect ratio: that's incredible... there is a fullscreen 1.33:1 in HD here!!! It was broadcasted as anamorphic 720p (even if the page title suggests there was a 1080 version); it is "simply" squeezed vertically, so when restored to proper aspect ratio, it would be 1280x960, as following:
sadly there are no seeders...
There is a 1.78:1 BD (Poland); also a 1.33:1 DVD, but I'd prefer to work with the HD one!
color grading: it seems there is only one
cuts: theatrical - it seems no deleted scenes exist
2004 — Resident Evil: Apocalypse
aspect ratio: two open matte HDTV found, to wipe out logo; there is a 1.78:1 BD (Benelux, Poland) but the master suffers from field blending, so I think it would be not possible to use it; also both 1.78:1 and 1.33:1 DVDs
color grading: it seems there is only one
cuts: theatrical, extended - the latter uses only 10 out of 20 deleted scenes found on BD and DVD
2007 — Resident Evil: Extinction
aspect ratio: two open matte HDTV found, to wipe out logo; one of them is faulty, so a third one is needed to get perfect results; also a 1.33:1 SDTV (don't know if DVD exists)
color grading:
- DVD (nicer and seems quite close to theatrical)
- BD/HDTV
cuts: theatrical - 11 deleted scenes found on BD
2010 — Resident Evil: Afterlife
aspect ratio: until now, the only known open matte HD 1080 is found here (comparison)
bad news, no seeders; good news, only opening scene is open matte. There are also about 3m30s open matte shots found in various HDTV caps, apart the first 5 minutes letterbox (comparison); hence, I'm pretty sure the Arab HDTV cap should have a grantotal of 8m30s shots in open matte; few lines more sometimes on bottom and/or top; also a 1.33:1 SDTV (don't know if DVD exists) but it seems just a cropped version.
color grading: there are three main ones
- DVD PAL
- BD, DVD NTSC
- Nova TV, MBC and others (similar to PAL DVD, more green)
plus
- TV 1000 (similar to PAL DVD, more magenta that could be "cured" lowering saturation)
according to various camrips, the Nova TV (et al) grading is very close to the theatrical one!
cuts: theatrical, censored - the latter deleted blood and other gory details, and have an alternating shot; there are extended scenes on BD
Note: it was released as IMAX, as you can see in this trailer (which is 2.10:1)
it's interesting to note that many shots involving CGI are slightly different!
2012 — Resident Evil: Retribution
aspect ratio: open matte web 1080p is OK - *maybe* another 1080 HDTV could improve quality; the main credits are OAR, but *maybe* they could be recomposited in open matte, using a latter scene; a test is needed test made; the scenes, apart reversed, differs in frame counts, hence can't be used
color grading: it seems there is only one
cuts: theatrical - 5 deleted scenes found on BD
2016 — Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
aspect ratio: does open matte exist?!?
color grading: 2D and 3D have very different color grading
cuts: theatrical - it seems no deleted scenes exist
Note: this also was released in IMAX, still to find out a proof of its aspect ratio, though

List of HD releases with brand new text and credits |

When distributors restore or remaster a film from negative they also have no way of reintroducing the original fonts used for the credits and on-screen text since these elements are usually introduced later on in the post-production chain from negative to final 35mm.
I thought this would be a good place to create a list of official Blu-Ray releases which DO NOT come with theatrical titles but rather with a digital recreation of them where the font used is sometimes close-enough, sometimes not even that, sometimes they are repositioned too and in most cases nobody notices it.
If you have some titles on Blu Ray that fit the criteria, please let me know and I'll add them to the list.
Films on Blu-Ray with new fonts, titles or credits

The Big Red One (new font on WB Blu-Ray)
Chariots of fire (original font on 20th Century Fox BR from France, new font on WB Blu-Ray from USA screenshot here))
Cobra Verde (new font reported on region B Blu-Ray by BFI, screenshot here)
Deliverance (new font on Blu-Ray and some DVD releases) screenshot here)
L'Enfer (BR by Cohen Media Group screenshot here)
Fantasia screenshot here)
Fedora (new font on French Blu Ray by Carlotta Films screenshot here)
Hard Times (new font on BR screenshot here)
Murder on the Orient express (1974) (original font found on HD stream, new font on StudioCanal Region B Blu-Ray) screenshot here)
1900 new font in Dall'Angelo Pictures BR, original font in Olive Films BR screenshot here)
Nosferatu - Phantom der Nacht (new font in all Blu-Ray releases by Shout, Arthaus and BFI screenshot here)
Shaft (new font on Ray screenshot here)
Stripes (new font and new positioning both on Blu-Ray and DVD) more info and some screengrabs here)
Suspiria (for the recent Italian 4k release they digitally recreated the original font and used it for both intro and end credits but originally the end credits had a different font)

Localized foreign versions of films are part of cinema history too but they have been disappearing since the introduction of the DVD. Aside from their historical value, transfers made in European countries from their own 35mm copies are rarely re-touched and restored and often give us a glimpse on how the film originally looked and in some cases localized foreign credits can even be a key element for creating textless versions in more advanced preservation projects that we do here.
Following the footsteps of fellow member Stamper, here's a list of films published or released in high definition with Italian localized credits.

In general, all films released in Italy by RAI / 01 Distribution make use of Italian DCP as their source (list on Amazon here) but I only add titles to the list as they are confirmed to me

French localised titles list |

I'm starting this thread since it could be good if all the info is gathered in one place.
I will list here as I come across them all french localised titles masters I find. This will grow as it goes. Feel free to contribute. Also feel free to start threads for italian, german etc. copies if you live there and have HDTV access.
The idea is, since the advent of DVD, all localised versions are disappearing from the surface of the earth, but some survive on HDTV or licensed DVDs/BDs. Some of them also included french inserts like Dirty Harry, which has the insert of the newspaper Scorpio reads on the roof shot in several languages with different versions, each in it's own language, of the newspaper mock-up. This revisionism must stop and history must be preserved so please indicate here any localised version you know about and I'll add them to the master list.
DVDs original versions:
- Con Air (branching) R1 early Disney DVD
- Enemy of the stare R1 early Disney DVD
HDTV real original versions:
- Die Hard 2 (1990) French HDTV airings saved by fellow forumer here.
- Mission Impossible (1996) French HDTV airings. Original titles, not redux. Looks like the color timing is the original with tons of blue. Worth saving?
- MI:2 (2000) French HDTV airings. Original titles, not redux, also includes all intertitles cards in french.
- True Lies (1994) French HDTV airings look like original titles, but there might be two different versions running around. This is the 2.35:1 version.
HDTV doctored versions / recreations to avoid
- Terminator 1984 French HDTV airings. Title card is remade in horrible arial like font, from the old DVD Pal master which had the text free insert. Useless.
- Back to the Future
- Spider-Man 2
- The Warriors French HDTV redux titles but theatrical cut!

Black Diamond Classics: Then and Now |

In this thread, we'll discuss the various home media editions of the Walt Disney Black Diamond Classics across home media, from 1984 to 1994, and beyond. The objective, naturally, is to figure out what the best version of each would be for my Walt Disney Classics documentary project, so as to ensure the preservation community doesn't get its wand in a knot, as the wizarding world likes to say. ;D
The films this thread will look at are:
- Robin Hood
- Pinocchio
- Dumbo
- The Sword in the Stone
- Alice in Wonderland
- Sleeping Beauty
- Lady and the Tramp
- Cinderella
- Bambi
- The Little Mermaid
- Peter Pan
- The Jungle Book
- The Rescuers Down Under
- Fantasia
- 101 Dalmatians
- The Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective
- The Rescuers
- Beauty and the Beast
- Aladdin
- The Fox and the Hound
This will be similar to OT.com's thread on the matter, but different in its focus in that the above 20 films will be the subject of this thread.

Tips on FFMPEG encoding for interlaced sources |

When encoding interlaced video files, I personally swear by FFMPEG. For over two months, I've been using Hauppauge's WinTV-HVR 9550 TV tuner to capture quality true HD footage from my PBS station–and when I was on vacation in Birmingham over the Easter weekend, I captured the same from my sister's PBS station–and then encoding the results via FFMPEG using the Yadif filter. Below is the formula I've been using for each encode, entered into Command Prompt:
ffmpeg -i in.ts -vf yadif=1 -acodec copy -vcodec libx264 -preset superfast -x264-params cabac=0 out.mp4
Tips on encoding interlaced non-broadcast video via FFMPEG will come later.
