Like most of my preservation efforts, I'm working on a release of this film for the Italian audience, however, I'm going to make use of seamless branching so this project will include both original and Italian versions of the intro titles. And since I'll be fiddling with seamless branching it's easy to add other alternative versions of the same segments, so I wanted to know if this film was ever released on home video in any other European countries with localized title screens? Perhaps in the French or German Laserdiscs and/or VHS? Can anybody check it out for me? I would love to add more localized versions.

I have made a custom BD of Total Recall.  It includes jonno's LD PCM, which I synced to the first UK BD (from Optimum) because the otherwise-similar-looking AVC-encoded BD that Optimum(UK)/Kinowelt(DE) later released had a bit of DNR/sharpening and because I didn't like the colors on the Ultimate Rekall Edition.  The HD DVD looks very similar but has an (admittedly minor) authoring error.

The first Optimum BD is OOP, so it's hard to get hold of it.  I made this version to make it easier for people who like the old color-timing and don't want to resync the LD PCM themselves.

This topic has kinda already started in the PDB's BTTF Open Matte Upscale Project.

This is my first real project.
I'm going to be using the famous DCPrip and apply a custom color correction to make it look more "theatrical" compared to the "raw interpositive scan" look of the 2002 master. Some members here will agree with me My main color reference comes from an old VHS TVrip which was sourced on a theatrical print.

My other goal is to add the "To Be Continued" title card that was originally included in the video releases of the movie then removed in 2002. Apparently there is no official and good quality version of this logo so I've decided to recreate it based on the original one. It's no 100% match but it's still pretty good looking IMO and of course, better than nothing.

I'm planning to release a typical x264 MKV file including my capture of the US Laserdisc audio track presented in its original uncompressed PCM form.

This has taken me a little longer than I had planned  

Over a year ago, Buster D sent me a rip of his Japanese Total Recall LD for syncing. He pointed out at the time that StudioCanal's current BD transfer is presented on disc in 24fps (not 23.976) and this might cause some problems - he wasn't wrong!

In the end I had to abandon the waveform match method and switch to a visual sync method. I needed to buy a copy of the disc so I had a video reference for the PCM sound, and (from the few options available in the UK) opted for the US ID7779IV release, which has the 'bonus feature' of being open matte.

Next I converted the BD video to the more conventional film rate (more on that in a moment), ripped and IVTCd the LD audio/video, and got syncing. The LD transfer begins with the Carolco logo, so I added the Tristar logo sound from the PCM on the Jacob's Ladder BD; the StudioCanal logo is left silent (more on that in a moment too).

Now, if you're planning on muxing this track with the BD video, you'll need to mux the video stream at 23.976 yourself; otherwise the sync will slip by around 7 frames by the end of the film. Presumably this is a straightforward option for MKV folks, and the original 44.1KHz version is available for this purpose. If you're making a Blu-ray, add the video and 48KHz audio, and set 'change fps' on the video stream to 24000/1001. I'd also recommend that you 'enable cutting' and set an inpoint at 21 seconds; this will start playback at the Tristar logo, as was the case theatrically (note that you'll also need to make a chapter point at 00:00:21.000 for this to take effect).

Hopefully it will all be worth it - it's a strong track and you can't go wrong with that Goldsmith score cranked right up  

Recently have started doing audio captures with my LD-V4300D, but I am only capable of capturing it via RCA connected to my Marantz PM5004. The outcome is great audio, but quiet. Therfore I would want to ask you what is better, to already capture with gain, or to normalize after the whole recording is done?

I recently reacquired the Australian Version R4 DVD of the film and, unfortunately, noticed that the audio on it is extremely poor and in mono for some reason. I want to do a "hybrid-cut" where I splice the BD together with the Australian R4 DVD to have a nice HD version of the Australian cut. I realize that someone just put up something similar on MS (albeit, only in 720p) but the result is not the best. Not putting down the efforts of the person that did it, but I think it could be done better. However, in order for this to be possible, I would need a capture of the audio from the Australian VHS tape.

I know we have some members here that are in Australia, so I thought I'd reach out and see if there is any chance of someone helping out. If not, then I might just buy the tape off ebay and take it from there...

Ok, I feel a bit embarrased saying this, but it was my first time and I found it very odd and funny!
I actually dreamed last night of watching a film print.

Well, in my dream, I downloaded an HDTV mkv version of An American Tail and as a surprise, you could choose between 2 different video options (like you do with audio options) and one of them was a magnificent looking film print of the movie (reminding me of the Bluray of The Land Before time) with fine grain and all!

So another question. I'm just getting into using AVIsynth and was trying to IVTC some footage. The original is a 29.97i MKV. I used telecide (tried different settings) and decimate to convert it to 480/23.97p. The original way I was IVTC-ing left a few bad combed frames over the course of the whole movie. This works much, much better but is giving me another problem. Even though the output file is reading 23.976 fps, the speed at which it is playing is way too fast. Looks almost 1.5 speed.

Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Would it be possible to regrade the current Blu-ray ( only 4:3 aspect ratio version) to the old japanese LaserDisc?
The look of the movie works so much better, then the later version, which I think is the actual color settings of the theatrical release.

The original mono audio from the laserdisc was shared by zeropc and synced by jj666 on another board and on ot.com

I don't know how the 2nd japanese LaserDisc transfer looks like, but it surely has a digital mono track.
I'm unsure however if it's the original theatrical mix. But maybe someone can help here, if a project like this is possible.

What do you guys think?
